Why You Should Never Put Bananas In The Refrigerator
Bananas...we all love them, whether it's in our cereal, delicious muffins, or using the name as a clever slang adjective to describe wacky situations. These fruits haven't been in the US for that long, less than 100 years in fact. So how did we learn to store these fruits anyway?
According to Chiquita, you should never put bananas in the refrigerator
Ever had bananas gone bad after sticking them in the fridge? It's disappointing, messy, and never works out well. While other fruits like the cold such as grapes, pineapple, and more, bananas love the heat as the original Chiquita jingle suggested.
The original Chiquita song and why it was written
According to the Chiquita website, the jingle and Chiquita herself came along to US customers in 1944. Because bananas were new to the Us many had difficulty knowing how to ripen and use the fruit properly. So without the help of the internet which was still years away from being a household staple, the Chiquita banana lady belted out the catchy instructions to the original jingle to help Americans store, use, and ripen the exotic fruit available to them for the first time.
What are the original lyrics to the banana jingle?
The lyrics seen here are a copyrighted work of the Chiquita Banana Company as of 1944. I hold no rights to the song or lyrics.
I’m Chiquita banana and I’ve come to say
Bananas have to ripen in a certain way
When they are fleck’d with brown and have a golden hue
Bananas taste the best and are best for you
You can put them in a salad – You can put them in a pie-aye
Any way you want to eat them – It’s impossible to beat them
But, bananas like the climate of the very, very tropical equator
So you should never put bananas in the refrigerator.
